Sharp Hedges was started by Haydn Cox in 2008, specialising in hedge trimming & topiary.
What began as a gardening business has evolved into a deliberately focused specialist service - built around precision, experience and an appreciation for the details that make a garden feel finished.
It started long before Sharp Hedges
Gardening was around me from an early age. I spent a lot of time in the garden with Mum, I remember she would never let Gran in the garden as she would always pull out the wrong thing. By the time I was nine I had already discovered that there was money to be made from a lawnmower, and while mum was visiting friends, I would mow their lawns.
At fourteen, a lawnmowing contractor from across the road asked whether I wanted some holiday work. That turned into mowing up to 24 lawns a day. By the time I left school, continuing with it felt like the natural thing to do. I bought a van, second-hand equipment, and gradually built the business - buying new gear as I could afford it.
Experience changed the way I work.
Over the years, I worked across all sorts of gardens and properties. That experience eventually led me towards the work I enjoyed most - hedges and topiary. The more I worked with them, the more I appreciated how much there is to getting them right.
I even stepped away from Sharp Hedges for a period during Covid to work full-time as a private gardener for one family. Working closely with one property reinforced just how much the small details matter. That experience stayed with me.
I don't try to do everything.
Sharp Hedges is deliberately specialist.
I have chosen to keep the scope of my work narrow, so the standard of the finished work can remain high.
There is a lot more to a good hedge than simply taking the growth off. The right cut considers the plant, its structure, its surroundings and how it will develop from there. That is the part of the work I enjoy. And after nearly two decades, it is where my experience is.
The details matter.
Sometimes the difference is only a few millimetres.
But a few millimetres can change the relationship between a hedge and a bench, a path, a building or the wider garden.
Experience teaches you when to take more off, when to leave something alone, and when a seemingly small adjustment will make the finished result completely different.
The aim isn't simply to make a hedge neat. It is to make it right.
The person doing the work.
I'm still the person you meet, quote with and who does the work. From the initial conversation through to the final clean-up, I take responsibility for the result.
Where appropriate, I use hand tools around houses, decks, railings and other areas where precision matters. I want to be remembered for the work I do, rather than any chunks missing from the property.
The same care applies after the cutting is finished. Clippings are collected, surfaces are left tidy and the property is treated with respect, leaving the property better than when I arrived.
I choose the properties and clients I work with carefully.
Sharp Hedges is a one-person business. That is intentional. It means I'm directly involved in every property I work on, and it allows me to maintain a level of consistency that becomes difficult when work is passed on between different people.
I don't try to be everywhere or take on every job. I choose the properties and clients I work with carefully, so I can give each one the time, attention and consistency that good hedge work deserves.
For me, it is building a list of properties I'm proud to look after, and relationships with clients who value the difference that attention to detail makes.
